Courses built around practice, critique, and portfolio output

This page outlines our core course tracks for Rotterdam studio sessions and live online participation across the Netherlands. Each track uses the same studio cadence: short demonstrations, guided work time, critique checkpoints, and a final deliverable that reads as a series. Availability changes by block, so the fastest way to confirm a start date is to request placement.

Course tracks

Think of these as repeatable studio modules. Each track has a clear technical focus, a short list of tools, and a defined outcome. Students often move from foundations to a portfolio block once their baseline control is consistent—line weight, value grouping, edge hierarchy, and color mixing accuracy.

Foundations

Drawing Foundations: line, proportion, value

A methodical start for anyone who wants drawings that read clearly. The work revolves around proportion checks, value grouping (light/mid/dark planning), and edge hierarchy so the image has a focal point. You’ll build a small set of routines: warm-up drills, quick thumbnails, and one longer study per block.

  • Weekly drills: straight lines, ellipses, and value ramps.
  • Rubric-based critique: proportion, value plan, and edge choices.
  • Deliverable: a cohesive charcoal or graphite series.

Painting Foundations: color mixing and edges

Learn to mix repeatable colors, control chroma, and avoid late-stage “rescues.” Exercises focus on limited palettes, temperature shifts, and clean edge handling so the painting holds together across sessions.

Mixed Media Exploration: collage, texture, layering

A structured exploration of layering strategies: collage integration, texture planning, and controlled mark-making. Critique focuses on composition, value structure, and how layers support the focal point.

Portfolio Block: series development and presentation

Turn a theme into a coherent body of work. The block is paced around iteration: thumbnail planning, studies, a consistent value plan, and final presentation choices. Critique focuses on cohesion—how each piece supports the set—rather than treating works as isolated projects.

Not sure yet: starting-point recommendation

If you’re between tracks, send a short note about your medium and what you want to build. We’ll suggest a sensible entry block for Rotterdam or online participation in the Netherlands.

How each course is structured

The structure stays consistent so learning doesn’t depend on mood or inspiration. A shared vocabulary is used in critique—value grouping, chroma control, line weight, and focal hierarchy—so feedback remains usable between sessions. Rotterdam studio participants get the physical rhythm of a shared workspace; online participants follow the same checkpoints, adapted for camera-friendly setups.

01

Demonstration and constraints

Each session starts with a focused demo and one constraint (for example: a limited palette, or a three-value plan). Constraints keep the work comparable, which makes critique sharper and less subjective.

02

Guided work time

You work while the instructor checks progress in short passes. Notes are phrased as actions—simplify the value groups, soften background edges, adjust proportion using a specific landmark—so you can repeat them at home.

03

Critique checkpoints

Critique happens in stages, not only at the end. Early checks prevent drift; mid-course checks keep the piece coherent; final checks focus on edits and presentation so the work reads cleanly as a set.

04

A defined deliverable

Every block ends with a deliverable—usually a cohesive mini-series. The point is not a single “best” piece, but a body of work that shows deliberate choices across multiple outputs.

Materials are treated as tools

You’ll receive a short essentials list per track, plus substitutions commonly available in the Netherlands. Explanations focus on function: why a paper surface matters for charcoal, what brush shapes do in paint, and how to avoid buying duplicates that don’t change outcomes.

What a weekly plan includes

A short, repeatable outline for Rotterdam and online students in the Netherlands. This is the backbone that keeps practice consistent between sessions.

Outcome disclaimer

Courses provide educational structure and critique. Artistic progress varies with attendance and practice time, and no academic, career, or professional outcomes are guaranteed.

Who these courses are for

Our typical student is an adult learner in the Netherlands who wants a stable routine: clear weekly expectations, short feedback loops, and an output that can be documented. The tone is calm and craft-focused; critique is specific, not performative.
